Spaghetti Recipe from A CHRISTMAS BOND!

What does food have to do with love? Why does a first date so often involve a meal? Why do we buy each other chocolates for Valentine’s Day? (Never mind, that’s obvious!) Why do so many romance novels have food scenes in them?

AChristmasBond72-4Here in Western Pennsylvania, we love our Italian food, and we love guys who cook! I know lots of men who cook for their families, especially on Christmas Eve. So, in my new novella, A Christmas Bond, the hero is known for his spaghetti. When the heroine comes to his door, angry about the Baby Jesus doll that’s missing from her grandmother’s outdoor nativity scene, John calms her and flirts with her over a big plate of homemade spaghetti.

John is the director of a school for boys who’ve gotten in trouble with the law, and over Christmas, he stays at the school with four of the worst offenders who can’t go home to their parents–or don’t have parents to go home to. The school staffers are all home with their families, so John’s looking out for the boys alone–and he’s cooking for them. Since he’s serving four teenage boys, his recipe is very hearty! Since he’s busy, he takes some shortcuts–canned tomatoes, and a bag of frozen onions and peppers. And since he’s got to be frugal–the Covenant school operates on a shoestring budget–he uses inexpensive ingredients. But the sauce tastes great!

John Moretti’s Spaghetti from A Christmas Bond

1 lb ground beefspag sauce

1 lb hot Italian sausage

3 large cans tomatoes

1 can tomato paste

1 packages sliced mushrooms

1 package frozen peppers and onions

Salt, pepper, oregano, and basil to taste

Brown and drain the meat, then sauté chopped onions, pepper, and mushrooms until tender. Add the meat back in, along with the tomatoes, tomato paste, and spices. Cook the sauce all afternoon until the house smells fantastic . . . and see who comes to your door!

When a loved one cooks for you, it’s more than a meal. You feel nourished, cared for, and ultimately loved. When has a home-cooked meal taken on a whole romantic meaning in your life? What are your favorite novels with recipes included?
